Primaries' dates could affect results |

Jan 14, 2007 - S.C. Democrats, fearing voters will turn out a week early to cast ballots in the wrong presidential primary, plan next week to ramp up publicity about when people should head to the polls. Their hope the state GOP will lend a hand appears to be a lost cause. State Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson said any confusion could help Republicans on their Jan. 19 primary day. The Democratic primary vote is the following Saturday, on Jan. 26. The weeklong lag between primaries and the way that state residents register to vote raise the possibility of confusion for voters. S.C. residents do not register by party and can cast ballots in either contest - but not both. Election workers Jan. 19 are expected to use lists to mark off who votes, and those people would be prevented from voting again the following week if they return to polls for the Democratic primary.
