New landfill rules win approval |
Aug 2, 2007 - Lawmakers agreed Thursday on comprehensive new regulations for landfills, a year after temporarily delaying construction of proposed mega-dumps in the eastern part of the state as they looked for a better way for North Carolina to take out its trash.
The landfill bill was one of the last remaining major pieces of legislation pending as lawmakers raced to act on dozens of issues before adjourning for the year. Lawmakers stayed late into the night each day this week, going back and forth from full sessions to impromptu conferences to hash out details of must-do bills. The House cleared one of its biggest unresolved issues by early evening, voting 65-46 in favor of legislation to upgrade permit, construction and siting requirements for landfills. The Senate approved the measure earlier in the day, just hours after a yearlong moratorium on new landfill permits expired. - Margaret Lillard, AP
