Brunswick Sheriff Wants More Officers in Schools |
|
Marh 1, 2007 - Marijunana and prescription pills are two drugs officials say turn up regularly in Brunswick County schools. Tuesday, the sheriff made a plea to put more eyes and ears in the hallways. Sheriff Ron Hewett asked the county commissioners for four more resource officers. That would put one in each middle and high school. He says the schools are growing and so is the drug problem. The county charged 111 students this year alone on different charges. Now with random school searches, officers say they need the extra help. "It will be a preventative measure so that young people who are thinking about bringing weapons, bringing drugs, or fighting or bullying on campus will think twice if there is more uniform patrol out there, and that is exactly our goal," says Sheriff Hewett. The four extra resource officers would cost about $170,000. By Kim Gebbia, WECT News
