Watt criticizes Bush cuts to housing development program |

Oct 10, 2006 - Rep. Mel Watt is criticizing the Bush administration's decision to cut a housing development program that has helped revitalize several Charlotte neighborhoods. Watt, D-N.C., toured a community on the city's north end Monday alongside Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson and Rep. Robin Hayes, R-N.C. He noted that the development - featuring 260 affordable apartments and 71 single-family homes - was made possible with a $35 million HOPE VI grant from HUD. "You can see, Mr. Secretary, communities replicated like this throughout the 12th District," Watt said, addressing Jackson. "And it took public incentives." President Bush has asked Congress to eliminate funding for the HOPE VI grant program in his 2007 budget after scaling back funding from $574 million in 2002 to $99 million in 2006. - AP
