WHO IS MAY MOORE?

May Moore is currently Brunswick County Commissioner for District Three.  She has served in this role since 2000.  She is a retired teacher with 25 years spent  in the middle schools of Brunswick County teaching math and language.  In 1994 she was “Teacher of the Year” for Brunswick County. May earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at Duke University, Phi Beta Kappa and a Masters in Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jimmy Moore, a retired commercial fisherman, is her husband.  Three grown children Hailey, Deborah, and Gibson complete her family.  May and Jimmy are active members of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

WHAT ELECTIVE OFFICES HAS SHE HELD?

* Presently Brunswick County Commissioner for District 3 since 2000.

* Served as Mayor of Yaupon Beach for 2 terms from 1988 to 1996.  Also, served on the Yaupon Town Council for 3 ½ terms from 1983 to 1996.

* Served on the Brunswick County School Board from 1970 to 1974.

WHAT DOES MAY THINK ARE THE BIGGEST ISSUES THAT FACE BRUNSWICK COUNTY IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?

ROADS--I spend much time lobbying for road improvements.  An inadequate and out dated road system is Brunswick’s greatest problem.  Road building is a state responsibility.  Much work has been done to lobby for improved roads in the county. Two much needed bridges are under construction.  The 2007-2013 TIP has more Brunswick County projects than ever. I pushed for a revised county transportation plan.  When its draft form did not include several needed projects I asked the commissioners to table it.

MAKING GROWTH PAY FOR ITSELF--  Expansion of water and sewer are being paid for by growth with our present policies.  Expansion in schools, recreation, emergency services are paid for from the property tax so current county residents help pay for services for new residents.  I am working to find a way to change this.

IMPROVING EDUCATION --Our schools are among the best funded in the state yet the drop out rate is too high and test scores are not improving in our schools at the rate I hope for.

WATER ACCESS AND WORKING WATERFRONTS--Water access and working waterfronts are disappearing at a rapid rate.  We must protect working waterfronts and increase water access.  We need to lobby the legislature for working waterfronts and commercial boats to be treated like farms and forests for tax evaluation.

OUR ENVIRONMENT--Our natural environment must be protected as we grow.  We must preserve water quality, seek more green space, and keep our county clean.

PROPOSED PORT --I do not have enough information to make an informed decision.  I worked with a number of others to develop a comprehensive list of questions which must be answered before the port is approved.  These were presented to the Port Authority about a year ago.  To date there have been no answers.  It seeems clear that the port will be of great benefit to North Carolina.  It is equally clear that without proper roads, rail, and environmental mitigation that Brunswick County will suffer.  We must prevent that.
