June 6, 2005 - Congress won't buy his proposed Social Security changes
"President Bush toured the nation for 60 days to promote his ideas for changing Social Security. From the public reaction, you'd think he was peddling Enron stock. Not only did public opinion of his reform plan nosedive during his tour, so did public opinion of his job performance. The reason the president's product didn't sell is that Americans saw it wouldn't solve the problem he described. Private savings accounts, for example, are worth considering, but they wouldn't prevent a Social Security shortfall. In fact, they'd make it worse if Social Security taxes were used to fund them, as the president wants. Democrats, mindful of the adage that if your opponent is shooting himself in the foot you don't tell him to hold his fire, didn't say much at all. And Republicans in Congress seem ready to do something, but not what the president wants." |
